Why Follow the Christian Calendar
Following a lectionary ensures that we cover as much of the Bible as possible, in a systematic way. Otherwise we would probably just read bits of the Bible which we like, think are edifying, or illustrate the sermon or point we want to get across. If, in God's providence, we have been given the Bible in all it's diversity, we should allow the wholeof it to speak. Even the difficult and offensive bits can be challenging. God's word is not always comfortable!
A lectionary also enables churchgoers the chance to look up and ponderthe Bible readingsin advance. It enables those who prepare and leadservices to createworship with a focus and shape. Following a lectionary enables the whole Church world-wide to know that it is attendingto the same Scripturesat the same time in it's worship. This gives a sense of community and encourages us all to commit ourselves corporately to listen for the will of God.
What is Epiphany?
Epiphany is the last day of the Feast (Festival) of Christmas. Epiphany celebrates the presentation of Jesus to the Gentiles symbolised in the worship of the Magi (Wisemen) at the manger. Epiphany is important as it reminds us that Jesus birth was for the whole world . We celebrate the fact that all people can discover Jesus, the Son of God, and that Godʼs promises and blessings are for everyone. The season of Epiphany continues this theme until we move into Lent.
What is Lent?
Lent is the period, after Epiphany, leading up to Easter. The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer — through worship, prayer, confession and fasting— for the annual commemoration during Holy Week of the Death and Resurrection of Christ - which recalls the events linked to the Passion of the Christ and culminates in Easter, the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus.
Conventionally, it is described as being forty days long. The forty days represent the time that, according to the Bible, Jesus spent in the desert before the beginning of his public ministry, where he endured temptation by Satan.
